This traditional cap, known as the Chitrali cap or Pakol (Khowar: پاکول), is a soft, flat-topped woolen hat originating from the mountainous northern regions of Pakistan, specifically the Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral areas.

History and Origins

• Ancient Roots & Evolution: For centuries, rolled woolen caps have served as staple headgear for the Shina and Kho peoples in the extreme north of Pakistan. While some historic theories attempted to link its shape to the ancient Greek kausia (worn by soldiers of Alexander the Great), modern historians generally view it as an independent development native to the Eurasian borderlands. Over time, local communities integrated a circular crown piece to create the distinct flat top.
• Geographic Spread: By the 19th century, the cap became firmly established in Chitral. From there, it spread through trade and regional migration into neighboring Nuristan and parts of Afghanistan. During the 20th century—particularly driven by Chitrali traders and businessmen—it gained popularity among urban populations and other communities, including the Pashtuns.

Design and Practicality

• Material: It is traditionally crafted from pure, handspun sheep’s wool, making it exceptionally durable and well-suited to harsh mountain climates.
• Adaptable Design: The cap features a rolled-up brim that can be adjusted down to cover the ears and neck during cold weather or rolled up when temperatures rise.
